How to Compare Motorcycle Insurance Quotes Online

Shopping for motorcycle insurance doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are key steps you can take to compare motorcycle quotes easily and save money on the best policy for your needs.

  1. 1

    Gather the information you need.

To get the most accurate motorcycle insurance quote, you'll need to provide these key details:

    • Your motorcycle's VIN (or the make, model and year)
    • Average annual mileage
    • How long you've held an active motorcycle license
    • Dates of completed safe riding courses
    • Your current motorcycle insurance information (if applicable)
    • Personal information including your age, address, and driving history
    • How you use your motorcycle (commuting, recreation, or both)
    • Where you store your motorcycle when not in use
    • Information that may qualify you for discounts, such as:, GPA for student discounts, Motorcycle club or organization memberships, or Military service
  2. 2

Determine your desired level of coverage.

Compare plans with identical coverage levels to make fair comparisons between companies.  See our guide to how much motorcycle insurance you need.

    Liability Coverage

    • Covers damages to others if you're at fault. Even though motorcycles cause less damage than cars, accidents can still lead to significant financial liability
    • Recommended: 100/300/100 ($100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident for injuries, $100,000 for property damage)

    Full Coverage (Comprehensive & Collision)

    • Collision: Covers your motorcycle in accidents regardless of fault
    • Comprehensive: Protects against theft, vandalism, weather damage, and animal collisions

    Additional Coverage Worth Considering

    • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM): Protects you if hit by someone with insufficient or no insurance
    • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Covers your medical expenses regardless of fault (required in some states)
    • Medical Payments: Similar to PIP but typically with lower coverage limits

    Specialized Protection

    • Gap Insurance: Covers the difference between your bike's value and loan balance if totaled
    • Contents/Personal Belongings Coverage: Protects items carried on your motorcycle
    • Roadside Assistance: Provides help for breakdowns and towing

    Minimum Recommended Coverage

    • Liability Coverage: 50/100/25 minimum (more if you have significant assets), but 100/300/100 is typically recommended.
    • Comprehensive and collision coverage (full coverage) is recommended unless your bike has very low value
    • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage matching your liability limits
    • Required state minimums for PIP/Medical Payments
  3. 3

Where Can You Get a Motorcycle Insurance Quote Online?
    • GEICO: GEICO has higher rates than some policies but lower rates than others. It is a well-known company with multiple discounts and coverage options, including unique ones like their mature rider and multi-cycle discounts. GEICO only sells its product online, not through agents.
    • Dairyland: Dairyland has excellent rates and customer service. They also have many motorcycle insurance coverage options and discounts, including discounted rates for mopeds and scooters. Unfortunately, Dairyland motorcycle insurance is only available in 42 states.
    • Nationwide: Nationwide offers a benefit for motorcycle riders who use repair shops within their pre-approved network. Using their network of repair shops means all repairs come with a written guarantee for as long as you own your motorcycle. Nationwide has year-round coverage available and multiple motorcycle insurance discounts for its customers.
    • Progressive: Progressive typically provides excellent rates and a wide variety of coverage options. They also have multiple discounts available, including a bundling discount, a motorcycle safety course discount and a discount for paying your policy in full. This provider offers coverage directly through the company or an independent insurance agent.
    • Markel: Markel boasts various motorcycle insurance coverage options, including rental reimbursement and funeral expense coverage. The company also has a detailed roadside assistance plan available to its customers, as well as extra accessory coverage designed to cover damage to parts of your motorcycle that aren't part of the stock unit.
    • Harley-Davidson Insurance: Harley-Davidson offers multiple unique discounts, including for people riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and riders who take their H-D Riding Academy new rider course. There is also a discount for homeowners who have proof of homeowners insurance. While they offer perks for riders who own a Harley, anyone who owns a motorcycle of any kind, even a scooter or a moped, can purchase insurance through the company.
  4. 4

Explore ways to save money on your motorcycle insurance policy.

Insurance companies typically offer lower rates if you:

    • Complete a safety course. Many insurers reduce premiums for riders who finish approved training programs.
    • Join certain motorcycle clubs. Membership in recognized riding organizations can qualify you for discounts with many insurance providers.
    • Bundle your policies. Combining your motorcycle coverage with your auto or home insurance often leads to savings.
    • Maintain a clean record. Avoiding accidents and traffic violations helps you qualify for safe rider discounts.
    • Pay annually. Making one lump sum payment instead of monthly installments can reduce your overall cost.
